This page has two jobs. First, it explains the one herb printed on the bottle we write about, what it is, and what the research does and does not say about it. Second, it lists the headlines we run, tells you which ones overreach, and separates the few things that are genuinely supported from the many that are not.
You almost certainly arrived here from an advertisement. The headline you clicked was written by us and paid for by us to appear next to real news stories. It was designed to make you stop scrolling, and some of our headlines lean harder on a story than the evidence does.
Everything on this site is a paid advertisement for a product sold by someone else. If you buy through a link on any of our pages, we may be paid a commission. That is the reason this site exists.
The product is clear morning Extract, Alcohol Free, a liquid extract sold by Nature's Answer of Hauppauge, New York: 2,000 mg of gotu kola aerial parts extract (1:1 dry herb equivalent) per 2 mL serving, in vegetable glycerin and purified water, 15 servings in a 1 fl oz bottle. No study has ever tested this bottle, the pooled trials of gotu kola found no difference from a placebo on cognitive tests, and the label's own front-panel claim is about something other than memory. Nothing on this page is a substitute for your own clinician.
If you have noticed names, words or errands slipping, the single most useful thing you can do is tell your clinician at your next checkup and keep a simple notebook of what you notice. That costs you nothing from us, and it is worth more than anything we write about.
| The headline as you saw it | What is actually behind it |
|---|---|
| "The Metronome on My Piano, and the Note a Violist Wrote on Staff Paper" | Story, not a claim The bottle is real; Leo, Mei-Lin, the orchestra and the town are composites, and the column is a dramatization built on the seller's listing, label and return page. |
| "The leaf for a long life" | Exaggerated That is a family tradition quoted in the story, not a finding. Gotu kola has a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese practice and is eaten as a salad green in South and Southeast Asia. Tradition is not evidence: a 2017 review that pooled the randomized trials found no significant effect on cognitive test scores. |
| "Alcohol-free, from a family company since 1972" | Broadly supported The label says "Alcohol-Free" and lists only gotu kola extract, vegetable glycerin and purified water. The seller says the leaf is extracted with alcohol and a cold process then removes it. One paragraph on the seller's page says "Low Alcohol," which is the name of a different version. |
| "About $1.20 a serving" | Broadly supported $17.99 for a 1 fl oz bottle the label counts at 15 servings of 2 mL, checked against the seller's listing in October 2026. At the label's directions, 1 to 2 mL three times a day, the bottle lasts five to ten days, or about $1.80 to $3.60 a day. |
| "Sixty-four bars from memory" | Story, not a claim The composite narrator kept a notebook, practiced the same music every morning, walked to the harbor, kept a regular bedtime, went back to a weekly coffee and took the extract, and says he cannot tell which one mattered. His count was already rising before the bottle. We do not claim the bottle did anything. |
Because stories stop the scroll better than ingredient lists do. That is exactly the problem. We keep the honest version of every claim here so you can compare it with the ad side by side.
The seller's return page says that if you bought directly from Nature's Answer, you email [email protected] to request a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number before sending anything back. With the number, you return the unused portion within 45 days of the purchase date, and the company says it will refund your money, send a replacement, or issue a credit for the unused portion.
The page also says the company is not responsible for shipping and handling costs on returned products, and asks that returns go to its Customer Service Department at 85 Commerce Drive, Hauppauge, NY 11788. If you bought the bottle in a store, that store's return terms apply.
The only herb · Weak evidence
A small, creeping plant with round, fan-shaped leaves that grows in wet ground from the tropical Old World to eastern Australia, also called Indian pennywort. It is eaten as a vegetable across South and Southeast Asia and has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese practice.
28 people · One result at one amount
In a small placebo-controlled trial, 28 healthy adults in their sixties, seven per group, took a placebo or one of three amounts of a dried water extract of gotu kola for two months. Only the highest amount, 750 mg a day, was associated with better working-memory performance and higher self-rated alertness.
Randomized trials · No difference on tests
A meta-analysis that pooled the randomized trials of gotu kola found no significant effect on cognitive test scores compared with placebo. It did find higher self-rated alertness, meaning people said they felt more alert though the test scores did not move.
Never studied · Different measure
The trials used dried extracts measured by weight of extract. This bottle lists 2,000 mg of 1:1 dry herb equivalent per 2 mL, the weight of the plant the liquid came from. The two measures cannot be converted into each other, so no trial result can be applied to this bottle.
One herb, amount printed, in a liquid made without alcohol in the bottle. A long tradition, one small trial with one positive result at its highest amount, a pooled review with no difference on the tests, and no study on this bottle. A simple daily habit at most, not a plan for your head.
The front of the bottle carries a claim about the body's defenses, with an asterisk, and says nothing about memory. The seller's web page uses confident language about the leaf and the mind that we do not repeat, because it goes further than the research does. The asterisks lead to the standard statement that the claims have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and that the product is not meant to stand in for medical care. That statement outranks every other line we print.
One picture on the seller's page cites a rating and a review count gathered across other websites for the brand as a whole. The page for this exact bottle shows no customer reviews, so we quote none. No clinician, panel or medical society has endorsed this page or this bottle.
None of our ads should be your health information. Forgetting a name now and then is common at any age, but tell your clinician promptly if you or your family notice getting lost in familiar places, trouble with everyday tasks you used to manage, repeating the same questions, changes in personality, or any sudden change in speech, vision or balance. Sudden changes need urgent care.
Skin rash has been reported with gotu kola, and rare reports of harm to the liver have been linked to gotu kola products: stop and talk to your clinician if you notice unusual tiredness, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. If you take anything daily, or are expecting or nursing, show the bottle to your pharmacist and ask your clinician before the first serving.
Everything printed on the label, in the order printed, with what it is.
A small, creeping perennial with fan-shaped leaves, native to wetlands from the tropical Old World to eastern Australia. It is eaten as a vegetable and in salads across South and Southeast Asia.
Traditional and everyday use. Used for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese practice, and eaten fresh as a salad green.
What the research says. In a small 2-month placebo-controlled trial of 28 healthy older adults, the highest dose (750 mg/day) of a gotu kola extract was associated with improved working-memory performance and higher self-rated alertness.[1] A 2017 review that pooled the randomized trials found no significant effect on cognitive test scores overall, though it did find higher self-rated alertness.[2]
Amount per serving in clear morning Extract, Alcohol Free. 2,000 mg per 2 mL serving (1:1 dry herb equivalent) (alcohol-free liquid extract in vegetable glycerin and purified water)
Good to know. Skin rash has been reported. Rare reports of harm to the organ that processes what you swallow have been linked to gotu kola products: stop and talk to your doctor if you notice unusual tiredness, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Laboratory studies suggest it may interact with some products processed by that same organ; talk to your doctor before use if you take anything daily.

Honest people can't promise that, and the label's FDA statement says its claims have not been evaluated. The pooled trials of gotu kola found no difference from a placebo on cognitive tests. Our column describes one composite reader who kept a notebook, walked, practiced and went back to a weekly coffee, and he could not say which one mattered.
No. The two-month trial used a dried water extract measured by extract weight, up to 750 mg a day. This is a liquid extract measured as 1:1 dry herb equivalent, and the two cannot be converted into each other.
The label says alcohol-free and lists only the extract, vegetable glycerin and purified water. The seller says the leaf is extracted with alcohol, which a cold process then removes before glycerin is added.
If bought directly from the seller, email for an RMA number and return the unused portion within 45 days for a refund, replacement or credit. Return shipping is paid by the customer.

This guide is part of the advertising page it links from. It exists because the ad that brought you here did not tell you the whole story.
If you remember nothing else: this is a liquid extract of one leaf with its amount printed and no alcohol in the bottle, the pooled trials of gotu kola found nothing over placebo on the tests, the label's own claim is about something else, a bottle lasts five to ten days, and your clinician outranks all of us.
